The case

Why we use it

Although we do recommend separating the innovation team from the rest of your business, what gives corporate innovation an edge over a startup is that you can leverage the strengths of the parent company. As you begin the process of innovation, it's important to get a clear picture of what core and differentiating assets can support your effort.

The mechanics

How It Works

When you consider which of your companies strengths and assets to mobilize in your innovation effort, you want to focus on your core and differentiating areas because these are what drive your competitive advantage. Use the UNITE business capability map in order to think systematically about your strengths. Capabilities are the processes, systems of knowledge, and specific skills that a firm possesses based on which it operates, earns revenue, and competes with other firms. Capability Maps summarize the capabilities of a firm visually. In this map, we break your business down into leadership capabilities, operating capabilities and proprietary assets and capabilities. In each of these categories, there a number of subsections that allow you to go deeper. After outlining capabilities across the firm, identify which are core or differentiating, and thus of high strategic relevance for the firm. Then you can begin to brainstorm which could be productively mobilized in your innovation effort.

The purpose

What is the goal of the model?

Efficient assessment of strengths and assets. Firms are often not good at reflecting on their capabilities. Using a capability map provides a solid base to systematically assess your strengths. Understanding your capabilities is the ultimate prerequisite for dealing with them appropriately: where should you innovate? Where to cut costs?

Beyond the download

Use this model in Axibra, not only in a slide deck

The PDF is yours to keep. But a model changes something only when it touches the work — and that is what Axibra does with it. The model becomes the structure your decisions are made in, and every outcome stays traceable back to the input it came from.

In practice

Where this model does its work

For years we applied this model by hand, in client engagements. It now runs inside Axibra.

Innovation

Axibra helps organizations grow their innovation capability — across the whole company, not in one team.

See how it works

Digital transformation

Axibra closes the infamous gap between strategy and execution, and carries a transformation through to delivery.

See how it works

Culture and organization

Culture is the first reason transformations fail. Axibra keeps the organizational side of a decision in view instead of leaving it to chance.

See how it works

Thousands of organizations leverage the UNITE models — these are some of them …

Need help putting this to work in your organization?

Axibra is where these models run. It carries a decision through to the work that follows it, and keeps every result traceable back to the input it came from. If you would rather start with a conversation, we are one call away.

Strategy does not fail in the thinking. It fails in the handover.
